Who do you say Jesus is?
Matthew 16:17
17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
If a Christian asks an unbeliever who Jesus is, the following possible answers you will hear from that person: a) don’t know b) He is a Christian God c) He was a carpenter d) He was a prophet e) He was a great man f) He was a good man and so on.
Jesus asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” The disciples answered, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” Here the term men is used to differentiate between Jesus’ disciples/followers and the people of this world. The same scenario can be applied in today’s world. There’s a gulf between the children of God and the children of the men. The people during Jesus’ time at best were only able to guess who Jesus was in spite of Jesus’ teaching in the Synagogues and other places and healing the sick and casting the demons out.
Even today many are not sure who Christ Jesus is. Many have a vague understanding of who He is. The reason we hear these kinds of vague answers from people is because they are using their own flesh and blood to guess the answers. Man is corrupted by nature and therefore his flesh and blood are corrupted too. When Peter said that Jesus was the Son of living God, Jesus answered and said to Peter that flesh and blood did not reveal who Jesus was but His Father who is in heaven revealed it to Peter. Men in Jesus’ time guessed Jesus wrongly on several occasions because they were using their flesh and blood to guide their spirit.
If an unbeliever asks a believer who Jesus is, what will be our answer? We are to say that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Because this is revealed to us by our Heavenly Father.
If you want to know who Christ is, then don’t guess using flesh and blood but plead with God the Father to reveal Lord Jesus Christ to you.
May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ bless you all!
Maranatha!
