That You May Believe

John 20:31

³¹ but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

The Gospel of John has 21 chapters. Already by the year 200 AD, John’s gospel was called the spiritual gospel precisely because it told the story of Jesus in symbolic ways that differ sharply at times from the other three. John used a variety of techniques to communicate to his readers the nature of Jesus. These include his citation of Jesus’s seven “I am” statements, in which Jesus spoke of Himself in terms such as “the Light of the world” (8:12), “the resurrection and the life” (11:25), and “the way, and the truth, and the life” (14:6). Much of John’s gospel (chapters 2–12) might be called the Book of Signs, as it recounts Jesus’s performing of seven different miracles—such as the turning water to wine at Cana and raising Lazarus from the dead at Bethany. These miracles illustrate His identity as the Son of God.

Anyone who wants to develop an intimacy with God has to read this Gospel. After reading 19 chapters of this Gospel of John you will find that death of Jesus was no ordinary death. The power of His resurrection was not a routine story. Everything that John wrote, he portrayed Jesus as the true Son of God. The end result of reading this book transforms our lives. From death to life. The Word of God convicts us to believe that Jesus is indeed the Christ.
