In the beginning

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God ………

Genesis 2:5b: and there was no man to till the ground;

The Words of God serves us in two ways. One is in a physical way and the other is in a spiritual way. When God created the heavens and the earth, it was a demonstration of God’s power, God’s love and God’s mind. In Genesis chapter 2 verse 5b, after God created the earth and the heavens, and before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field God had to think about creating man to till the ground. So, we can safely say that man’s intended purpose was to make sure that the ground is tilled so that the ground would yield the crop. Even before anything was added to the ground, God thought about the man that He is going to create. God had a purpose for the man that He is going to make.

Let us for a minute understand what tilling does to the ground. Tilling is where the earth is overturned. That means taking what is underneath the ground and turning it outside in. By doing this the ground gets the right nutrients causing the microbes and the bacteria to grow. Tilling helps the soil loosen and gives the water the ability to flow freely without stagnating. So, when a seed is planted into the ground, the seed quickly grabs all the nutrients available in the soil, causing the seed to germinate with a strong root system. Thus the land becomes fertile and whatever is seeded into that ground will yield a 1000 fold return. Tilling is simply turning over and breaking up the soil. Exactly how deep you till and how fine you break up the soil depends on your reason for tilling.

In yesterday’s blog I mentioned about how the earth turned dry. Today we will see how this dry earth needs to be tilled first and brought out to the top surface to expose it to the air and moisture. The layer beneath the earth’s surface when properly tilled turns out to be the best soil that can be used for crops and planting purposes. Similarly the Word of God tills man’s inner layer which is man’s heart. If allowed by man it turns man’s inner thoughts and behavior and cleans it up by giving new life and perspective. So, when God’s seed is sown in that person’s life, the seed or the Word springs up with strong root system and grows into a mighty tree supporting many lives. Without God’s Word tilling in our lives there is no way one can prosper spiritually. Just as man was appointed to till the ground, we have to allow the Word of God to till our hearts from inside out. May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ bless us all!
