Leviticus 10:9
“Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations”.
Many times, we come across some Christian believers who say that it is okay to drink moderately as long as they do not get drunk. When we examine certain passages in the scripture for example the qualifications of a deacon is that the deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. And as for as being an elder he must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine …
In the case of Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, when they offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded, the fire went out from the Lord and devoured them and they were consumed by the fire. After that the Lord spoke to Moses saying: “By those who come near me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.”
Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying: “Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them by the hand of Moses.”
Every true born again believer has been given the same authority as the sons of Aaron, to perform the duties of a priest that is to offer intercessory prayers for the needy and submit it through the blood of Jesus Christ who died for us on the cross. Those who are God’s children have the same ability to lift the needs of those who are poor in spirit so that the Lord would strengthen them and use them for His glory. True born again believers are supposed to teach others to distinguish between holy and unholy, between unclean and clean. That is the reason the Levitical Priesthood priests were not allowed to drink wine or beer or other strong drinks and enter into the presence of God which was the holiest of holies. You decide what you want to do whether to drink occasionally or regularly. If you think there is nothing wrong in drinking moderately think again. 1 Corinthians 3:16 says, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” The Spirit of God does not dwell occasionally but He dwells in us all the time. Think about it before you answer the question whether occasional drinking is okay or not. Because it is easier for us to justify that occasional drinking is okay and so does occasional recreational drugs or marijuana usage etcetera and etcetera. But then where is the end to it?
May our Lord give us the discerning mind to choose what is clean and what is unclean. May all the glory and honor belong to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Until next time. In Jesus name. Amen.
