John 17:2

as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. 

Every Word that the Lord Jesus spoke is so precious. The Word of our Lord Jesus Christ is filled with power. One needs to understand the way He spoke. In the above verse, Jesus did not open His mouth and spoke gibberish. For many people of this world it sounds like gibberish and are unable to understand His Words even though Jesus spoke normal language just like any one of us. The writers of the Bible were extremely careful how they worded the Words of Christ. Nothing was added or deleted to the Words of Christ or for that matter the entire Bible. The Bible was written by 40 authors over 1500 years under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 6:9
And He replied: “Go and tell this people, ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’

In the Gospel of Mark chapter 4 vs 12 Lord Jesus said: so that, “they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!”

In other words if men are able to understand the Words of Jesus, then by just hearing that Word, they would come to repentance and ask for God’s forgiveness and be forgiven. The Lord explained to His disciples the purpose of Him speaking in parables. In the world that we live in, even the plain Words of Jesus, people are unable to grasp and understand let alone understanding the Words of Jesus speaking in parables.

In the above verse from the Gospel of John chapter 17, Jesus began to pray before He was betrayed by one of His own disciple. Here in verse 2, our Lord spoke in plain language that He has the authority over all flesh and that He has the power to give eternal life to as many as the Father has given Him. I would like to focus on one aspect here. Christ has the authority over all flesh. That means Christ has the authority over the entire mankind since the beginning of the creation of Adam and until the He decides to end it. No human knows that number but only God knows because He is the one who created each one of us. This is what our Lord Jesus spoke when He prayed to His Father in Heaven, that Jesus has the authority over all flesh. So, no one escapes Jesus. Today in this world there are hundreds if not thousands of religions and some of them are packed with philosophies and new age ideas etcetera. None of these religions matter. Only Christ Jesus has the authority to give us the eternal life.

If anyone is not able to perceive the Words of Christ,  that person needs to turn away from his sin(s) and trust in Jesus to be forgiven of his sinful life. At that point he has passed from spiritual death to spiritual life (John 5:24) and has been declared not guilty in God’s court of law (Rom 3:21-26). May Christ grant you His grace and enable you to understand what you are missing in this life. In Jesus name. Amen.
