Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
For several days we have been focusing on God’s Word from the Book of Romans chapter three verse twenty three:
“all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory”
Now we see the end result of falling short of God’s glory. The end result of continuous sinning leads to death. In order to learn about death, first we need to study the term sin. Sin is defined as missing God’s mark or missing God’s expectation. Now why is this so important?
Because God is a holy God and everything He does is pure. God spoke to Moses in Leviticus chapter nineteen verse two:
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.“
Holiness means to be set apart or to be separate. Why should a Christian live a life separated to God? Separated from who? I am glad you asked. Separated from the world. Everything in this world after the fall of Adam was cursed by God. That includes the entire creation. Because of this the wrath of God is on those who are disobedient to the Word of God. When God speaks, He speaks by ordinances. Nothing proceeds from the mouth of God by accident. Because of the holiness within Himself, He is not able to lie. When He promises something that He would do, He will do it for sure. Such a mighty God we serve.
God’s assurance gives every believer a new life. In other words the old lifestyle or nature has to pass in order to receive the new life. There is no short cut or there is no repair done to the old self. The old nature has to die in order to receive the new nature. Same thing applies to the other things of this creation. The old creation has to pass away in order for the new creation to take over. God’s kingdom is not built upon old and corrupted creation. The new heaven will come down from heaven. In the Old Testament, God addressed the sin problem by introducing the sacrifice system. The sacrifice of an animal was the basis of redemption of mankind. The animal was killed and its blood was offered on the altar. This offering is also called as the atoning for sins or the propitiation of sins.
Adam and Eve were hiding behind the bushes covering their nakedness with fig leaves after they had the knowledge to know the good and evil. You see a leaf can only last a day or two when plucked from the tree. It will be of no use after that. If Adam were to cover his nakedness everyday, then he had to collect the dead and dry leaves everyday to cover his nakedness. But after God found what Adam and Eve did, He covered them with the animal skin that lasts a lifetime. This is the spiritual truth why God wanted man to offer animal blood sacrifice. A better blood sacrifice that was offered by our Lord Jesus Christ 2000 years ago surpasses all the animal sacrifices. The blood of Jesus that was shed once for all is an everlasting covenant through which every born again believer is brought into the throne room of God.
May we give thanks to God the Father through Jesus Christ for enabling us to understand what it means to seek the glory of God.
In Jesus mighty name. Amen.
Maranatha!
