Matthew 12:8
8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.
After the Lord said that He is Lord even of the Sabbath, He went on to say this:
Matthew 12:11-12
11 Then He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? 12 Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
Jesus went on to say that if a sheep falls into a pit on the Sabbath day, would not the Shepherd rescue it? In other words if a child of God or a born again believer falls into sin on a Sabbath day, does God wait until the Sabbath day passes? No. If that believer cry’s for help on a Sabbath day, then Lord Jesus will come to that person’s rescue and forgive his sins the moment the man cries out to God for forgiveness. So, not doing anything on a Sabbath day is only applicable to the Jews because they are still living in their unbelief of the Messiah.
God rested on the seventh day after the six day creation. That means there was nothing else that was needed to be accomplished. The last thing that God finished was by forming man and He saw everything that He had made and indeed it was very good. Therefore He rested from His work. It was finished.
Genesis 1:31
31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.
Now, let me take you to another truth. In John chapter nineteen and verse 30, Jesus Christ said it is finished and gave up His spirit.
John 19:30
30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
After Christ rose up from the dead on the third day and after 40 days, Christ ascended into heaven, there He sat by the Father’s throne at the right hand of God. Because His work was finished. The purpose for which He was sent by God was accomplished on the cross of Calvary.
Hebrews 10:12
12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,
The Sabbath rest that was lost in the Garden of Eden was regained with Christ sitting down on the right side of the Father. These are deep spiritual matters. One cannot understand these truths. The Father and the Son both accomplished their respective purposes and rested.
Sabbath means to rest or to desist from exertion. When we examine another passage from the Book of Genesis 2:2: We see that God Himself rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Christ Jesus on the other hand rose from the dead on the day after Sabbath day. Meaning He accomplished His work and rose on a Sunday. He could have picked Saturday to resurrect Himself from the dead but instead He chose the Sunday. That is because He did it according to the will of the Father.
Since the believers are in Christ, therefore we celebrate the day of His resurrection. The day of rest is for those who are still under the law. But we are in grace, therefore the law does not apply to the believers in Jesus Christ. For Jesus Christ is Lord even of the Sabbath.
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, you and your household.
In Jesus precious name! Amen.
Maranatha!
