LORD JESUS CHRIST
Matthew 26:2
2 “You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”
In the Book of Exodus chapter twelve, we read that the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron to take a lamb for each household in preparation for the Passover. The Passover lamb shall be without blemish, or without defect, a male of the first year. In order to understand the Passover, we need to go back to the first book of the Bible, Genesis.
Genesis 12:15
13 Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.
You see the Lord God of Israel made a covenant with Abraham and said that his descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs. For over four hundred years, the Israelites spent their lives in Egypt and now it was time for God’s promise to be fulfilled. For one last plague, the Lord God spoke through Moses to bring a lamb and slain it and take the blood of the lamb and apply it to the door post of each household using an hyssop bunch.
That night the Lord would pass over the Egypt and smite all the first born whose door posts did not display the blood of the lamb. As surely as the Lord spoke, He passed through the land of Egypt in the midnight and struck all the first born of Egyptians dead and because of this great loss the Pharaoh set the Israelites free. For this reason the Jewish people celebrate the Passover even to this day as it is supposed to commemorate as an everlasting event.
As we read in the Gospel of Matthew, Lord Jesus chose the Passover day to hand Himself over the Roman authorities. While the Jews remembered the Day of Passover, our Lord surrendered to the sinful world. The Passover was the day of freedom for the Jews from the oppression of bondage and slavery. For over four hundred years, they suffered under the Pagan rulers.
Little did they understand that even after God set them free, they never stopped murmuring, never stopped grumbling. They never learned to give thanks to the Lord God of Israel. They were still living under the bondage of sin and slavery.
Lord Jesus Christ chose the day of Passover to show the world that freedom comes at a cost. Eternal life comes at a cost. One cannot buy freedom or one cannot achieve eternal life by purchasing from someone. Only God has the authority to give freedom from sin and slavery. Only Christ Jesus has the authority to give us the eternal life. Only Christ is able to redeem us through the shedding of His blood. We are His purchased possession.
A person’s ancestors can suffer for over four hundred years and yet the released family member can still live in the bondage of sin and slavery even though he is living in the free world from the previous generation.
Lord Jesus Christ willfully surrendered His life to be crucified on the cross of Calvary. He was the Lamb of God. The Israelites experienced God’s grace on the Day of Passover because their lives were spared. The blood of an innocent lamb saved them. I pray and hope that this Good Friday the Jews across the world as they celebrate the Passover, look at the Lamb of God, Lord Jesus Christ who died on the cross for all of our sins.
You see in the Old Covenant, God allotted one lamb for each household. In the New Covenant God allotted one Lamb of God, that is Christ for the entire household of God. Now there is neither Jew nor Gentile. Those who are saved by the blood of Lord Jesus Christ, belong to one body. Christ is the head of this one body.
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!
