BIBLE FACTS OF THE DAY

Introduction

Many people today redefine sin.
Some call it a mistake.
Others call it weakness.
Some even say sin doesn’t exist at all.

But God does not soften the definition.

John speaks plainly:
Sin is not an accident.
Sin is not merely imperfection.
Sin is rebellion.

And until we see sin correctly, we will never seek the Savior seriously.

1. The Reality of Sin

“Whoever commits sin…”

John makes it universal.

• Sin is not limited to criminals
• Not just the immoral
• Not just “bad people”

It includes:

• wrong thoughts
• wrong motives
• wrong actions
• neglected obedience

Sin is both what we do and what we refuse to do.

Illustration

A person may look moral outwardly yet still live independent of God. That independence itself is sin.

Because sin is not just behavior — it’s a heart condition.

2. The Definition of Sin

“…sin is lawlessness.”

This is the heart of the verse.

Lawlessness means:

• rejecting God’s authority
• ignoring God’s commands
• living as if God has no right to rule us

Sin is not merely breaking rules.
Sin is breaking relationship with God.

It is saying:

“I will live my way, not God’s way.”

That is rebellion.

From the beginning:

• Adam chose his will over God’s
• Humanity followed the same path

Sin is cosmic treason against a holy King.

3. The Seriousness of Sin

If sin is lawlessness, then sin is not small.

We minimize sin:

• “It’s just a lie”
• “It’s just anger”
• “It’s just compromise”

But every sin says:

“God, You are not my Lord.”

Sin nailed Christ to the cross.

If sin were small, the cross would not be necessary.

The price of sin was:

• the suffering of Christ
• the blood of Christ
• the death of Christ

Never treat lightly what cost Jesus everything.

4. The Incompatibility with the Christian Life

John writes this to believers.

Why?

Because a child of God cannot live comfortably in lawlessness.

A true Christian:

• may stumble
• may struggle
• may fall

But cannot live in continual rebellion.

There will be:

• conviction
• correction
• repentance

If someone claims Christ but loves sin, something is wrong.

Light and darkness cannot dwell together.

5. The Call to Righteous Living

If sin is lawlessness, then salvation means surrender.

Christianity is not:

• just forgiveness
• just church attendance
• just belief

It is submitting to Christ as Lord.

We move from:

• rebellion → obedience
• self-rule → Christ’s rule
• lawlessness → righteousness

Grace does not excuse sin.
Grace empowers holiness.

6. The Hope of the Gospel

Here is the good news:

Though we were lawbreakers, Christ kept the law perfectly.

Though we rebelled, He obeyed.

Though we deserved punishment, He took our place.

Because of Jesus:

• sins are forgiven
• hearts are changed
• lives are transformed

We don’t just receive pardon — we receive new life.

Conclusion

Ask yourself:

• Am I excusing sin or fighting sin?
• Am I living for self or under Christ’s lordship?
• Do I grieve over sin or grow comfortable in it?

Remember:

Sin is lawlessness.
But salvation is surrender.

Choose obedience.
Choose holiness.
Choose Christ.

“Lord, help us see sin the way You see it. Break our love for rebellion. Give us hearts that obey You joyfully. Thank You for the cross that forgives us and the Spirit that changes us. Make us holy as You are holy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
