    Deuteronomy 7:7-8

The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; 8 but because the Lord loves you,

    INTRODUCTION

    Why did God choose Israel?

Why that people and not another?

Why Abraham and not someone else?

This question goes to the heart of God’s purpose, God’s covenant, and God’s plan for the redemption of the world.

And the answer is profoundly beautiful, deeply theological, and immensely practical—because understanding why God chose Israel helps us understand how God works, how salvation works, and how grace works.

Today we will walk through five biblical reasons for God choosing Israel.

    I. GOD CHOSE ISRAEL BECAUSE OF HIS SOVEREIGN LOVE

Deuteronomy 7:6–8 is God’s clearest statement:

“The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number… but because the LORD loves you.”

    God tells Israel:

    • You weren’t the largest nation.
    • You weren’t the strongest.
    • You weren’t the most righteous.
    • You didn’t earn or deserve My choice.
    • I chose you simply because I loved you.

This is God’s sovereign grace—grace that flows from His heart, not our merit.

Israel’s choosing is a picture of our salvation:

    • We didn’t earn God’s favor.
    • We didn’t climb our way to God.
    • God set His love on us first.

    1 John 4:19:

“We love Him because He first loved us.”

    Application:

Whenever you feel unworthy, remember: God’s choice is not based on your performance but on His love. Israel’s story reminds us that grace always precedes goodness.

II. GOD CHOSE ISRAEL TO KEEP HIS PROMISE TO ABRAHAM

Go back to Genesis 12:1–3. God approached a pagan man named Abram in Mesopotamia and said:

    • “I will make you a great nation.”
    • “I will bless you.”
    • “In you all families of the earth shall be blessed.”

God’s choice of Israel is God keeping His covenant word.

    God promised Abraham:

    • Land
    • Descendants
    • Blessing
    • A nation that would bless all nations

Every time Israel rebelled and God restored them…

Every time God preserved them from annihilation…

Every time the nation survived against impossible odds…

    …it was God saying:

“I am faithful to My covenant.”

    Application:

The God who keeps His promises to Abraham keeps His promises to you.

The choosing of Israel showcases the faithfulness of God, even when His people are unfaithful.

III. GOD CHOSE ISRAEL TO DISPLAY HIS GLORY TO THE WORLD

    Exodus 19:5–6:

“You shall be to Me a treasured possession… a kingdom of priests… a holy nation.”

    Israel was chosen to reveal:

    God’s presence in the sanctuary

    God’s holiness

    God’s law

    God’s covenant standards

    God’s character.
