John 18:6
6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
In Exodus 3:14b, God the creator speaks to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.” I AM means Jehovah in English and YHWH in Hebrew. The name proclaims self-sufficient and sovereign God. “I AM” may be translated as “I will be.”
John chapter 18 depicts the arrest and betrayal of our Lord Jesus Christ in the garden of Gethsemane. This is where Jesus meets the troops and the officers from the Chief Priests and Pharisees office. As Jesus questions them who they were looking for? They respond by saying, “Jesus of Nazareth”. This is when our Lord answers by saying, “I AM HE”. Here Jesus co-equals Himself with the Father, the Lord God Almighty.
As soon as they heard Jesus speak, everyone of the men that came to arrest Jesus fell to the ground. This power of Jesus reminds of God the Father confirming that Jesus is His beloved Son in whom He is pleased at the Mount of transfiguration. This is mentioned in Matthew 17:5. After the incident of Jesus transfiguration the disciples fell face down. This is to show that Jesus and the Father indeed are one. Jesus has the same power as the Father. Let us exalt Jesus Christ today for His power and glory. For His sovereignty rules over all of the Universe. Let us thank Him today with all our heart, with all our mind and with all our strength. In Jesus name! Amen.
