Introduction

The prophecy in Book of Ezekiel 38–39 describes a future invasion of Israel by a powerful coalition of nations led by Gog.

Israel will appear vulnerable, but this chapter reveals something very important:

God Himself will fight for His people.

This passage reminds believers that history is not controlled by political leaders or armies — it is controlled by God.

1. The Gathering Storm (Ezekiel 38:1–9)

God tells Ezekiel:

“Son of man, set your face against Gog…” (Ezekiel 38:2)

Gog is the leader of a coalition including nations such as:

  • Persia (modern Iran)
  • Cush
  • Put (modern Libya)
  • Gomer and Togarmah (often associated with regions around Turkey)

They come from the far north with a massive army.

The Purpose of the Invasion

The enemy comes to:

  • Take plunder
  • Capture wealth
  • Destroy Israel

The attack appears overwhelming.

But something very important is happening behind the scenes.

God says:

“I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out.” (Ezekiel 38:4)

This means God is actually drawing the nations into this battle.

Lesson

Even the plans of evil nations ultimately serve God’s purposes.

2. The False Security of the World (Ezekiel 38:10–13)

The prophecy says Israel will be:

  • Living in peace
  • Dwelling securely
  • Without walls or defenses

The enemy sees this and thinks it is the perfect opportunity to attack.

The world often believes:

  • Military power controls history
  • Nations control their own destiny

But the Bible teaches something different.

God controls the rise and fall of nations.

3. The Divine Intervention (Ezekiel 38:18–22)

When the armies invade, God intervenes dramatically.

God says:

“My fury will show in My face.” (Ezekiel 38:18)

God sends:

  • A great earthquake
  • Confusion among the armies
  • Pestilence
  • Flooding rain
  • Great hailstones
  • Fire and brimstone

The enemy armies will even turn their swords against each other.

This shows that Israel’s victory will not come from military strength but from God Himself.

4. The Ultimate Purpose of the War (Ezekiel 38:23)

God explains why this event happens:

“Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations.”

The purpose is not primarily political.

The purpose is spiritual.

God will reveal:

  • His holiness
  • His power
  • His authority over the nations

The world will know that the God of Israel is the true God.

5. What This Means for Us Today

Although this prophecy concerns Israel, it teaches powerful truths for believers today.

1. God is Sovereign Over History

No nation rises or falls outside God’s control.

Kings, presidents, and armies are not ultimately in charge.

God is.

2. God Defends His People

Throughout Scripture, God protects those who belong to Him.

Believers today are protected not by armies but by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus said:

“In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

3. God Will Reveal His Glory

The final goal of all prophecy is the glory of God.

One day every nation will recognize His authority.

This truth is ultimately fulfilled in the return of Jesus Christ.

Conclusion

Ezekiel 38 reminds us that:

  • The world may seem chaotic
  • Nations may rage
  • Armies may gather

But behind everything stands the sovereign hand of God.

The God who defended Israel will one day establish His kingdom forever.

The question for each of us is this:

Are we ready for the day when God reveals His glory to the world?

The only true refuge is found in Jesus Christ.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You that You are sovereign over the nations and over history. Even when the world seems uncertain, we know that Your plans cannot fail. Help us to trust You and to live faithfully as we wait for Your purposes to be fulfilled.

May our lives bring glory to Your name, and may many come to know the salvation found in Jesus Christ.

In Jesus’ name we pray.

Amen.
