PART II — WHEN WILL THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH HAPPEN?

“Caught Up to Meet the Lord”

1 Thessalonians 4:16–17

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God…. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.”

There is coming a moment unlike anything humanity has ever experienced.

Paul calls it being “caught up.”

The Greek word is harpazō—to seize, snatch, or take away.

The Latin translation used rapiemur, from which the English theological term rapture developed.

So although the English word “rapture” does not appear in most English Bibles, the biblical teaching of believers being “caught up” certainly does.

1. THE LORD HIMSELF WILL COME

Notice Paul’s words:

“The Lord Himself will descend from heaven…”

Jesus is not merely sending an angel.

The Lord Himself is coming.

The Jesus who was born in Bethlehem.

The Jesus who walked through Galilee.

The Jesus who healed the sick.

The Jesus who raised Lazarus.

The Jesus who carried the cross.

The Jesus who was crucified.

The Jesus who rose from the grave.

The Jesus who ascended into heaven.

That same Jesus is coming again!

Acts 1:11 declares:

“This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner…”

2. THE DEAD IN CHRIST WILL RISE

1 Thessalonians 4:16:

“And the dead in Christ will rise first.”

The burial ground is not the final destination of the believer.

The grave does not get the final word.

Death does not get the final word.

Jesus Christ gets the final word.

Jesus said in John 11:25:

“I am the resurrection and the life.”

Every believer who died in Christ is awaiting resurrection.

3. LIVING BELIEVERS WILL BE CAUGHT UP

Then comes this extraordinary statement:

“Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds…”

Imagine that moment.

Across nations.

Across languages.

Across cultures.

Across generations.

The people of God are gathered to Christ.

And Paul finishes:

“And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”

That is the heart of the rapture.

Not merely escaping trouble.

Not satisfying prophetic curiosity.

Not winning an argument about timelines.

Being with Jesus forever.

4. OUR BODIES WILL BE CHANGED

1 Corinthians 15:51 declares:

“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—”

When?

Verse 52:

“in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.”

Think about those words:

IN A MOMENT.

There will be no time then to prepare.

No time then to repent of years of deliberate rebellion.

No time then to decide that perhaps you should finally take Christ seriously.

Preparation must happen before that moment.

5. BUT WHEN WILL IT HAPPEN?

Here we must distinguish between what Scripture clearly states and how Christians interpret the prophetic timeline.

Bible-believing Christians hold several major views concerning the relationship between the rapture and the tribulation.

Some believe in a pre-tribulation rapture as this author believes—that Christ gathers His Church before the final tribulation.

Others believe the Church is gathered during or near the end of the tribulation.

Others understand the rapture and Christ’s visible second coming as closely connected aspects of the same climactic return.

Faithful Christians have disagreed about these details.

Therefore, we should hold our prophetic convictions firmly where Scripture is clear and humbly where interpretation is disputed.

But there are truths upon which we must not compromise:

Jesus Christ is coming again.

The dead in Christ will rise.

Living believers will be caught up.

Believers will be transformed.

We will be with the Lord forever.

And—

No human being knows the exact day or hour.
