PART III — THE POWER RELEASED

“Walk in the Spirit”

How, then, should believers live?

Paul gives us the answer.

Galatians 5:16

“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

Notice the word:

WALK.

Walking is continuous.

Walking is daily.

Walking is step after step.

The Spirit-filled life is not merely about one emotional experience at an altar.

It is a daily life of dependence, surrender, obedience, prayer, and fellowship with God.

1. SURRENDER DAILY

Every morning we should recognize:

“Lord, this life belongs to You.”

Romans 12:1

“Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

Yesterday’s surrender does not excuse today’s rebellion.

Yesterday’s obedience does not replace today’s obedience.

Yesterday’s prayer does not replace today’s prayer.

There must be a continual yielding of ourselves to God.

My mind belongs to You.

My mouth belongs to You.

My hands belong to You.

My feet belong to You.

My plans belong to You.

My future belongs to You.

Use me for Your glory.

2. BE CONTINUALLY FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

Paul commands believers:

Ephesians 5:18

“Be filled with the Spirit.”

Paul was writing to Christians.

Therefore, being indwelt by the Spirit and living under the Spirit’s filling and influence should not simply be treated as identical ideas.

The Spirit dwells within the believer, but believers are commanded to continually yield themselves to His influence.

Think of a sailboat.

The wind may be blowing powerfully.

But the sail must be raised.

Likewise, we must stop trying to move God’s work forward through our own strength.

Raise the sail of surrender.

Let the Spirit direct you through the Word of God.

3. THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT PRODUCES HOLINESS

Sometimes Christians hear the word power and immediately think about spectacular miracles.

But one of the greatest demonstrations of the Holy Spirit’s power is a transformed life.

Galatians 5:22–23

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”

Consider what this means.

When hatred becomes love—

that is spiritual power.

When bitterness becomes forgiveness—

that is spiritual power.

When lust is resisted—

that is spiritual power.

When pride becomes humility—

that is spiritual power.

When an angry person learns self-control—

that is spiritual power.

When someone who lived for sin begins hungering for holiness—

that is spiritual power.

The Spirit’s power doesn’t merely make us louder.

The Spirit’s power makes us more like Jesus.

4. THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT MAKES US WITNESSES

Return to where we started:

Acts 1:8

“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…”

The ultimate purpose of this power is not self-exaltation.

It is Christ-exaltation.

The Spirit empowers us to take Jesus:

From our homes,

to our workplaces,

to our neighborhoods,

to our cities,

to the nations.

And there is something beautiful about the wording:

Jesus doesn’t merely say:

“You will witness.”

He says:

“You shall be witnesses.”

Our words testify about Christ.

Our conduct testifies about Christ.

Our marriages should testify about Christ.

Our forgiveness should testify about Christ.

Our integrity should testify about Christ.

Our response to suffering should testify about Christ.

Our entire lives should point people toward Jesus.

SERIES CLIMAX — STOP LIVING LIKE YOU ARE EMPTY

Believers, hear the Word of God.

The enemy wants you to look at your weakness.

God wants you to depend upon His strength.

The enemy whispers:

“You cannot overcome.”

But Scripture says:

“Walk in the Spirit.”

Fear says:

“You cannot speak.”

Jesus says:

“You shall receive power.”

Your flesh says:

“Give up.”

But the Spirit produces:

faithfulness and self-control.

Maybe our prayer should stop being only:

“God, give me power.”

And sometimes become:

“God, teach me to surrender to the Holy Spirit You have already given me.”

Because the issue is not whether God possesses enough power.

GOD IS ALMIGHTY.

The issue is whether we will surrender ourselves to Him.

THE FINAL CALL

Born-again believer:

You are not called to live a powerless Christian life.

You have been called to walk in the Spirit.

When you are weak—

depend upon the Spirit.

When temptation comes—

walk in the Spirit.

When fear rises—

depend upon the Spirit.

When God opens a door to witness—

speak through the Spirit’s strength.

When suffering comes—

lean upon the Spirit.

When you do not know how to pray—

depend upon the Spirit.

And when God uses you mightily, never stand up and say:

“Look what I have done.”

Point toward Jesus and say:

“LOOK WHAT GOD HAS DONE!”

Because Jesus promised:

“YOU SHALL RECEIVE POWER WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS COME UPON YOU.”

The power is not given so that we become famous.

The power is given so that Jesus becomes known.

The power is not given so that we receive glory.

The power is given so that Christ receives glory.

So Church—

DO NOT LIVE AS THOUGH YOU ARE EMPTY.

DO NOT FIGHT SPIRITUAL BATTLES ONLY WITH HUMAN STRENGTH.

DO NOT ALLOW FEAR TO SILENCE YOUR WITNESS.

WALK IN THE SPIRIT.

BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT.

LIVE BY THE SPIRIT.

WITNESS THROUGH THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT.

And let the world see what God can do through ordinary people who are completely surrendered to an extraordinary God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Forgive us for the times we have tried to live the Christian life through our own strength. Forgive us for grieving Your Spirit, resisting Your direction, and allowing fear to silence our witness.

Teach us to walk in the Spirit every day.

Fill us with holy boldness. Give us strength to resist temptation, courage to proclaim Jesus Christ, love for those around us, and power to live lives that glorify You.

May our homes experience the fruit of the Spirit. May our churches demonstrate the power of the Spirit. May our communities hear the Gospel through Spirit-empowered witnesses.

And when You use us, keep us humble enough to remember that the power belongs to You and the glory belongs to You.

May our lives continually declare:

Jesus Christ is Lord!

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ,

Amen.

“Maranatha! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
