Introduction
This moment took place in the Garden of Gethsemane, just hours before the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Prophetically, this scene mirrors the condition of the world and the church just before Christ returns.
I. The Sleeping Disciples – A Picture of the Last Days
While Jesus was praying, the disciples were sleeping.
This is a prophetic picture of spiritual conditions before the return of Christ.
Many people today are spiritually asleep:
- asleep to sin
- asleep to prophecy
- asleep to eternity
- asleep to the coming judgment
Jesus warned this would happen.
Matthew 24:37 says the last days would be like the days of Noah—people living normally while judgment approaches.
The world is busy eating, drinking, building, and celebrating, while prophetic events are unfolding.
The tragedy of the last days is not ignorance—it’s spiritual sleep.
II. The Approaching Hour – Prophetic Time Is Running Out
Jesus said:
“Behold, the hour is at hand.”
Throughout Scripture, God moves according to prophetic timing.
Just as the hour of the cross arrived, the hour of Christ’s return will also arrive suddenly.
Scripture warns:
- 1 Thessalonians 5:6 — “Let us not sleep, as others do.”
- Romans 13:11 — “Now it is high time to awake out of sleep.”
We are living in a generation where:
- Israel is restored
- the gospel is preached globally
- moral darkness is increasing
These are signs the prophetic clock is advancing.
III. Betrayal Before the Breakthrough
Jesus revealed something shocking:
The betrayal was already happening.
Judas Iscariot was approaching with soldiers.
Before the greatest victory (the resurrection), there was betrayal, darkness, and suffering.
Prophetically this reminds us:
Before Christ returns, Scripture says there will be:
- deception
- betrayal
- persecution
- falling away
Matthew 24:10 says many will betray one another.
Even among believers, loyalty to Christ will be tested.
IV. The Call of the End Times – Wake Up
Jesus’ question echoes through history:
“Are you still sleeping?”
This is a call to the church today.
God is calling His people to:
- wake up spiritually
- pray with urgency
- live holy lives
- discern the times
The hour demands watchmen, not sleepers.
V. The Final Prophetic Message
The Garden of Gethsemane reveals a powerful truth:
When Jesus returned to His disciples, their moment of preparation had already passed.
Soon the soldiers would arrive.
Likewise, there will come a moment when prophetic time closes.
Scripture says Christ will return suddenly.
1 Thessalonians 5:2 says the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
Powerful Closing
In Gethsemane, Jesus asked:
“Are you still sleeping?”
Today that same question echoes across the world.
- Nations are shaking
- prophecy is unfolding
- eternity is approaching
The hour is at hand.
The only question is:
Will the church be sleeping… or watching?
Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!
