PART III — “AND ONE SAT ON THE THRONE”

Revelation 4:2

“…and One sat on the throne.”

This may be the most powerful statement in the verse.

The throne is not empty.

Someone is sitting there.

John says:

“ONE SAT ON THE THRONE.”

1. God Is Not Pacing Around Heaven

Think about the picture Scripture gives us.

God is sitting.

Why?

Because God is not nervous.

God is not anxious.

God is not wondering what happens tomorrow.

God is not trying to develop another strategy because His first plan failed.

He knows the beginning from the end.

Isaiah 46:9–10
“For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning…”

We pace because we don’t know tomorrow.

God sits because tomorrow is already known to Him.

We worry because we cannot control circumstances.

God reigns because nothing exists outside His sovereign authority.

2. Everything in Revelation Moves Around the Throne

This becomes one of the great themes of Revelation.

The elders surround the throne.

The living creatures surround the throne.

Worship rises before the throne.

Judgments proceed from the throne.

The Lamb appears in relation to the throne.

The redeemed worship before the throne.

Everything ultimately points toward the throne.

Why?

Because God must remain at the center.

This is also the problem with sinful humanity.

Man wants the throne.

Human beings want to become the rulers of their own lives.

We want to say:

My life.
My desires.
My plans.
My body.
My future.
My decisions.

But salvation brings us to the place where we surrender the throne.

Jesus Christ does not come merely to become part of our lives.

He is Lord.

3. The Throne Leads Us to Worship

Look at what happens in Revelation 4:10–11:

“The twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever…”

Notice their position.

They fall down.

True revelation produces humility.

The closer we come to God’s holiness, the less impressed we become with ourselves.

They even cast their crowns before the throne.

The crown represented honor.

The crown represented reward.

The crown represented achievement.

Yet when they see God—

their crowns belong at His feet.

They declare:

Revelation 4:11
“You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things…”

That is the destination of Revelation 4.

Worship.

4. One Day the Whole Creation Will Recognize the Throne

Today people deny God.

Today people mock Christ.

Today people reject Scripture.

Today people live as though there is no Creator.

But Scripture tells us that history is moving toward an appointed conclusion.

Philippians 2:10–11
“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord…”

The question is not ultimately whether Christ will be acknowledged as Lord.

He will.

The question is whether we willingly bow before Him now.

THE THREE GREAT TRUTHS OF REVELATION 4:2

Revelation 4:2 gives us three tremendous spiritual pictures:

Part I — “I was in the Spirit”

God calls us to see from heaven’s perspective.

Part II — “A throne set in heaven”

God’s sovereign authority has never been shaken.

Part III — “One sat on the throne”

The throne is occupied, and God reigns forever.

And therefore the Church does not have to live in fear.

We do not know everything tomorrow holds.

But we know Who occupies the throne.

We cannot control the nations.

But we know Who occupies the throne.

We cannot predict every circumstance.

But we know Who occupies the throne.

We may walk through suffering.

But the throne is occupied.

We may walk through persecution.

But the throne is occupied.

The world may grow darker.

But the throne is occupied.

The Church may face opposition.

But the throne is occupied.

And when the final chapter of human history has been written, God’s throne will still stand.

Revelation 22:3
“…the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.”

FINAL CALL

Brothers and Sisters, perhaps we have been looking in the wrong direction.

We have looked at the storm.

We have looked at governments.

We have looked at the economy.

We have looked at the culture.

We have looked at the enemy.

We have looked at ourselves.

But Revelation 4:2 cries:

“BEHOLD!”

Look higher.

Look beyond Patmos.

Look beyond the trouble.

Look beyond the darkness.

Look beyond the uncertainty.

There is a throne in heaven.

And that throne is not empty.

GOD SITS UPON IT.

Therefore, let the Church worship.

Let the Church pray.

Let the Church preach.

Let the Church remain holy.

Let the Church remain faithful.

Let the Church proclaim Jesus Christ without fear.

Because kingdoms will rise and kingdoms will fall.

Generations will come and generations will disappear.

Heaven and earth will pass away.

But our God reigns forever and ever.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, open our spiritual eyes as You opened John’s eyes on Patmos. When circumstances overwhelm us, turn our attention toward Your throne. Remind us that You have never lost control, Your authority has never weakened, and Your purposes can never be defeated. Remove every idol that attempts to occupy the throne of our hearts. May Jesus Christ truly be Lord over our thoughts, desires, families, churches, and lives. Give Your Church courage to stand in these last days, knowing that there is a throne set in heaven and You reign forever.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
