Introduction — Heaven Has a Registry
There are many records on earth. Governments keep records. Banks keep records. Hospitals keep records. Courts keep records. But there is one registry greater than all earthly records combined — the registry of Heaven.
Hebrews 12:23 declares that there is a people called “the church of the firstborn” whose names are registered in heaven. This is not symbolic language alone. It is a spiritual reality. God knows those who belong to Him.
The greatest question is not:
- What church do you belong to?
- What denomination are you part of?
- How much money do you have?
- What position do you hold?
The greatest question is:
Is your name written in Heaven?
Jesus Himself declared:
“Rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” — Luke 10:20
There is coming a day when every earthly title will vanish, every kingdom will fall, every human achievement will fade away, but those whose names are written in the Book of Life will stand forever before God.
1. “The General Assembly” — The Gathering of the Redeemed
Hebrews describes a heavenly gathering unlike anything on earth.
This is not a political convention.
This is not a worldly celebration.
This is the eternal gathering of the redeemed saints of God.
The word “assembly” speaks of celebration, victory, and divine union.
Every born again believer from every tribe, nation, and language belongs to this heavenly assembly through Jesus Christ.
What the world divides, Christ unites.
On earth there are denominations.
In Heaven there is one redeemed people.
The blood of Jesus is stronger than race.
Stronger than culture.
Stronger than language.
Stronger than history.
The Church is not merely a building.
The Church is the living Body of Christ.
2. “The Church of the Firstborn” — Why Firstborn?
In Scripture, the firstborn carried inheritance, authority, blessing, and covenant rights.
Under the Old Covenant, the firstborn son received the inheritance. But through Jesus Christ, every true believer becomes part of “the church of the firstborn.”
Jesus is the eternal Firstborn Son of God.
Because we are united with Christ, we share in His inheritance.
This means:
- We are heirs with Christ.
- We belong to the Kingdom of God.
- We are adopted into the family of Heaven.
- We are no longer spiritual orphans.
The Devil wants believers to live like beggars when Heaven calls them sons and daughters.
The enemy reminds people of their past.
God reminds believers of their inheritance.
You may have been rejected by men,
but if you belong to Christ,
Heaven calls you chosen.
You may have been abandoned on earth,
but Heaven calls you family.
3. “Registered in Heaven” — The Book of Life
This is one of the most terrifying and glorious truths in all Scripture.
God keeps a heavenly registry.
The Book of Life is real.
Moses spoke about it.
Daniel saw it.
Jesus confirmed it.
John saw it in Revelation.
One day the books will be opened before the throne of God.
Those outside Christ will face eternal judgment.
But those washed by the blood of Jesus Christ have their names written in Heaven.
Salvation is not earned by human effort.
Salvation comes through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Religion cannot register your name in Heaven.
Good works cannot register your name in Heaven.
Church attendance cannot register your name in Heaven.
Only the blood of Jesus Christ can wash away sin.
This is why the Cross is central to Christianity.
Without the Cross there is no forgiveness.
Without the blood there is no cleansing.
Without Christ there is no eternal life.
4. “To God the Judge of All” — The Holiness of God
Modern society wants God as Savior,
but not as Judge.
But Hebrews 12:23 reveals both:
- God is loving,
- yet God is Judge of all.
Every secret thing will be revealed before Him.
No politician escapes His courtroom.
No rich man escapes His authority.
No hidden sin escapes His sight.
The Judge of all the earth sees:
- every word,
- every thought,
- every motive,
- every rebellion.
This is why humanity desperately needs Jesus Christ.
Jesus is not merely a teacher.
He is the Mediator between sinful man and a holy God.
At Calvary, mercy and judgment met together.
The wrath we deserved was placed upon Christ,
so that those who believe in Him might receive eternal life.
5. “The Spirits of Just Men Made Perfect” — The Finished Work of Christ
This refers to the redeemed saints who have gone before us.
Abraham.
Moses.
David.
The prophets.
The apostles.
The martyrs.
The faithful believers throughout history.
They were not perfected by works.
They were perfected through the sacrifice of Christ.
The Old Covenant pointed forward to Jesus.
The New Covenant reveals Jesus fulfilled it all.
The blood of bulls and goats could never fully remove sin.
But the blood of Jesus cleanses forever.
When a believer dies,
death is not the end.
Their spirit enters the presence of God.
The grave cannot hold the redeemed.
Hell cannot claim those purchased by Christ.
This is the hope of the Gospel.
6. The Warning — Do Not Reject Heaven’s Invitation
Hebrews 12 is both encouragement and warning.
God is calling people into His Kingdom,
but many reject Him.
Some are too distracted.
Some love sin more than truth.
Some want religion without repentance.
Some want Heaven without surrender.
But the invitation still stands today.
Jesus Christ still saves.
Jesus Christ still forgives.
Jesus Christ still delivers.
Jesus Christ still transforms sinners.
The doors of mercy remain open,
but one day the final trumpet will sound.
The question is not whether Christ is coming again.
The question is:
Are you ready to meet Him?
Conclusion — Is Your Name Written in Heaven?
Hebrews 12:23 gives a glimpse into eternity.
A heavenly assembly.
A holy Judge.
Redeemed saints.
A heavenly registry.
And Jesus Christ at the center of it all.
This world is temporary.
The Kingdom of God is eternal.
One day:
- cities will crumble,
- nations will fade,
- wealth will disappear,
- human glory will vanish,
but the redeemed of the Lord shall stand forever.
Today Heaven is calling.
Repent of sin.
Turn to Jesus Christ.
Surrender fully to Him.
Receive the salvation purchased at the Cross.
For blessed are those whose names are written in Heaven.
Amen.
Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!
