Introduction: Names Do Matter

We live in a culture where names are often treated as labels, but in Scripture, names carry profound significance. A biblical name reveals character, authority, reputation, purpose, and identity. When David opens Psalm 8, he does not merely praise God’s existence—he exalts His name.

The psalm declares that God’s name is excellent in all the earth because God Himself is excellent. His name represents His holiness, His power, His mercy, His justice, and His faithfulness.

The Bible repeatedly shows us that names matter because they reveal who someone is and what they stand for.

I. God’s Name Reveals His Character

“O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!”

In many English Bibles, the first “LORD” represents the covenant name Yahweh (Jehovah)—the self-existent, eternal God who revealed Himself to Moses.

When God declared His name, He was revealing His nature:

• He is eternal.
• He is unchanging.
• He keeps His promises.
• He is faithful through every generation.

His name is not excellent because it sounds majestic; it is excellent because His character is perfect.

When we call upon the Lord, we call upon the One who cannot lie, cannot fail, and cannot change.

Application

The world may disappoint you, but God’s name remains trustworthy. Every promise He has spoken is backed by His perfect character.

II. God’s Name Carries His Authority

Throughout Scripture, acting “in someone’s name” means acting under that person’s authority.

David confronted Goliath saying:

“I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts.”

The power was never in David’s sling but in the authority of the God he represented.

Likewise, believers pray in Jesus’ name, preach in Jesus’ name, baptize in Jesus’ name, and gather in Jesus’ name because His authority stands behind His people.

The enemies of God fear His authority even when men ignore it.

Application

Do not place your confidence in your own abilities. Walk confidently because you belong to the King whose authority extends over heaven and earth.

III. God’s Name Deserves Worship

David begins and ends Psalm 8 with the same declaration:

“How excellent is Your name in all the earth!”

Creation itself proclaims God’s greatness:

• The stars testify to His wisdom.
• The oceans reveal His power.
• The mountains display His majesty.
• Human life reflects His creative hand.

Every sunrise silently preaches that His name is worthy of praise.

Worship is ultimately about recognizing the greatness of God’s name above every competing allegiance.

Application

Do not worship God only with your lips. Honor His name with your obedience, integrity, and daily conduct.

IV. The Name of Jesus Is Above Every Name

The New Testament reveals the fullness of God’s saving work in Jesus Christ.

His name means “The LORD saves,” perfectly expressing His mission to rescue sinners.

The apostles preached that salvation is found in no other name because Jesus alone bore our sins, died, rose again, and reigns forever.

Every knee will one day bow, and every tongue will confess His lordship.

Application

The name of Jesus is not a lucky phrase or magical formula. It represents the risen Savior, whose authority and grace bring forgiveness and eternal life to all who trust in Him.

V. Believers Are Called to Honor God’s Name

The third commandment forbids taking God’s name in vain, but honoring His name goes beyond avoiding careless speech.

We honor God’s name by:

• Living holy lives.
• Speaking truthfully.
• Keeping our promises.
• Loving others.
• Reflecting Christ in our workplaces, homes, and churches.

When Christians live faithfully, they bear witness to the greatness of God’s name before the world.

Conversely, hypocrisy can bring dishonor to the One we profess to serve.

Application

Ask yourself: When people observe my life, are they drawn to respect the name of God or to question it?

Conclusion: His Name Is Excellent in All the Earth

David looked at the heavens and proclaimed:

“O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!”

Kings rise and fall. Nations flourish and fade. Human fame is fleeting.

But God’s name remains eternal.

His name comforts the broken.
His name strengthens the weak.
His name humbles the proud.
His name saves the repentant.
His name deserves the worship of every heart.

May we not merely speak His name but live in a way that reflects its excellence.

The greatest question is not whether people know your name, but whether you know the Lord whose name is excellent in all the earth. Trust Him, honor Him, proclaim Him, and let every aspect of your life bring glory to His holy name. For His name is above every earthly reputation, and His glory fills both heaven and earth.
