Introduction

The lifting of hands was never intended to be empty ritual.

It was the outward expression of an inward heart.

Throughout biblical history, God’s people lifted their hands because they recognized His greatness.

Biblical Examples

Solomon

At the dedication of the Temple, Solomon spread out his hands toward heaven.

The glory of God filled the Temple.

Ezra

When Ezra read God’s Word, the people lifted their hands and cried,

“Amen! Amen!”

Worship and obedience always belong together.

David

David declared:

“Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.” (Psalm 63:4)

Paul

Paul instructed believers:

“I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands…” (1 Timothy 2:8)

Notice:

Not simply lifted hands…

Holy hands.

God desires surrendered hearts before outward expressions.

Lifted hands represent:

• Praise
• Thanksgiving
• Dependence
• Repentance
• Surrender
• Faith
• Expectation

Closing

Every lifted hand in Scripture prepares us for the greatest pair of lifted hands the world would ever see—

The pierced hands of Jesus Christ.
