Part 3 — Lifted Hands on Calvary: The Greatest Victory Ever Won

Primary Text

John 19:17–30

Introduction

The Romans believed they had executed another criminal.

The Jewish leaders believed they had silenced Jesus forever.

Satan believed he had finally defeated the Son of God.

But heaven saw something entirely different.

Christ’s lifted hands were not a picture of defeat.

They were the banner of victory.

What Happened at the Cross?

Jesus defeated sin.

“He Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree.” (1 Peter 2:24)

Jesus defeated Satan.

“Having disarmed principalities and powers…” (Colossians 2:15)

Jesus conquered death.

“O Death, where is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:55)

Jesus opened heaven.

The veil was torn from top to bottom.

Access to God became available through Christ.

The Cross Looked Like Defeat

The world saw weakness.

God revealed power.

The world saw shame.

God revealed glory.

The world saw death.

God brought eternal life.

The lifted hands of Jesus became the greatest victory ever accomplished.

Closing

Moses lifted weary hands.

Jesus lifted pierced hands.

Moses needed Aaron and Hur.

Jesus stood alone.

Moses won one battle.

Jesus won every battle forever.
