PART I — THE SWADDLING CLOTHS OF THE DIVINE SON

Luke 2:12

“And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” (NKJV)

Introduction

The birth of Jesus Christ is one of the greatest miracles in human history. Yet, many people—including some who call themselves Christians—question whether Jesus was truly God. They admire Him as a teacher, prophet, or moral example, but deny His deity.

However, the angel who appeared to the shepherds gave them a very specific sign—not merely that a baby had been born, but how that Baby would be found.

“Wrapped in swaddling cloths.”

Nothing in Scripture is accidental. Every word carries divine significance.

Isaiah had already declared nearly 700 years earlier:

“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given… And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

Notice the paradox.

A Child…
yet the Mighty God.

A Baby…
yet the Everlasting Father.

Only Christianity presents such a miracle.

Jesus did not begin His existence in Bethlehem.

He came from heaven.

John declares:

“In the beginning was the Word…and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

Then verse 14 says,

“The Word became flesh.”

The eternal God entered time.

1. Swaddling Clothes Covered the Holy One

Swaddling cloths were long strips of linen wrapped tightly around a newborn.

Unlike Adam after sin, Jesus entered the world already covered.

This is deeply significant.

Genesis tells us that after Adam sinned,

“They knew they were naked.”

Nakedness became the evidence of guilt.

Sin always exposes.

Sin uncovers.

Sin brings shame.

But Christ entered this world completely covered because He came without sin.

He had nothing to hide.

Nothing to be ashamed of.

Nothing to confess.

Peter writes,

“Who committed no sin.” (1 Peter 2:22)

Paul says,

“Who knew no sin.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

2. Adam Tried to Cover Himself

Genesis 3 tells us Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together.

Religion still does the same today.

People attempt to cover themselves by

• good works
• morality
• charity
• rituals
• self-improvement

Yet none remove sin.

God rejected man’s covering.

Instead,

“The LORD God made tunics of skin.”

An innocent animal died.

Blood was shed.

The first sacrifice pointed to Christ.

3. Jesus Came Already Prepared for Sacrifice

Even His birth points toward His death.

The One wrapped in cloths would later be wrapped again after the crucifixion.

His life began wrapped.

His earthly ministry ended wrapped.

Both point toward redemption.

God’s plan never changed.

Jesus came for one purpose—

to save sinners.

Application

Jesus is not merely another child born into history.

He is Heaven wrapped in humanity.

The Mighty God became a baby so sinful men could become children of God.
