Bible Facts Of The Day, August 22, 2026 “BEHOLD, A THRONE SET IN HEAVEN – PART I”

Revelation 4:2 (NKJV)
“Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.”

Revelation chapter 4 takes us from the struggles of the churches on earth to the sovereignty of the throne in heaven.

John had seen churches struggling with persecution, compromise, false teaching, spiritual deadness, and lukewarmness. But when the door of heaven opens, God does not first show John the Antichrist. He does not first show him the tribulation. He does not first show him the judgments.

God shows him a throne.

Before God reveals what will happen on earth, He reveals Who is ruling from heaven.

That is the message of Revelation 4:2:

Earth may be shaking, but heaven is not.
Nations may be confused, but heaven is not.
Human governments may change, but the throne does not.
The world may appear out of control, but God has never surrendered His throne.

PART I — “IMMEDIATELY I WAS IN THE SPIRIT”

Revelation 4:2

“Immediately I was in the Spirit…”

1. John Was on Earth, but God Showed Him Heaven

John was physically on the island of Patmos.

Patmos represented isolation.

Patmos represented suffering.

Patmos represented persecution.

Patmos represented what appeared to be defeat.

But Rome could imprison John’s body without imprisoning his spirit.

The emperor could send John to an island, but he could not prevent God from opening heaven.

There are moments when your circumstances say, “You are trapped,” while God says, “Look up.”

Your body may be standing in Patmos while your spirit is beholding the glory of God.

John’s environment did not determine his revelation.

That teaches us something powerful:

Your circumstances do not determine God’s ability to reveal Himself to you.

Joseph saw God’s faithfulness in prison.

Moses encountered God in the wilderness.

Daniel received revelation in Babylon.

Paul and Silas worshiped God in prison.

And John saw heaven from Patmos.

Sometimes the place you would never choose becomes the place where God reveals something you would never otherwise have seen.

2. Spiritual Things Must Be Spiritually Discerned

Paul writes:

1 Corinthians 2:14
“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God…”

The throne John was about to see could not be understood merely through human reasoning.

There is an earthly perspective and there is a heavenly perspective.

Earth says:

“Look at the problem.”

Heaven says:

“Look at the throne.”

Earth says:

“Look at what the enemy is doing.”

Heaven says:

“Look at what God is doing.”

Earth says:

“Everything is falling apart.”

Heaven says:

“Everything is moving according to the sovereign purpose of God.”

This is why believers desperately need spiritual vision.

We can spend so much time watching the world that we forget to look toward heaven.

3. The Spirit Changes Our Perspective

John had already seen the condition of the seven churches.

He knew about persecution.

He knew about false doctrine.

He knew about spiritual compromise.

But now God lifts John’s attention from the churches to the throne.

Sometimes God does not immediately change your circumstances.

He changes your perspective.

You may still have the same battle.

You may still have the same opposition.

You may still have the same unanswered question.

But once you see the throne, you see your battle differently.

Isaiah experienced something similar.

Isaiah 6:1
“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up…”

An earthly king died.

But Isaiah discovered that the heavenly King was still alive.

Uzziah’s throne became empty.

God’s throne never became empty.

Declaration

Do not allow Patmos to become bigger than heaven.

Do not allow your circumstances to become bigger than your God.

Ask the Holy Spirit to lift your spiritual eyes.

Because when heaven opens, the first great revelation is this:

GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE.

“Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
