Revelation 4:2

“…and behold, a throne set in heaven…”

The word “behold” demands attention.

John is essentially saying:

“Stop. Look. Pay attention to what I saw.”

And what does he see?

A THRONE.

1. The Throne Represents Absolute Authority

A throne represents kingship.

A throne represents government.

A throne represents authority.

A throne represents dominion.

Revelation does not present heaven as chaotic.

There is government in heaven.

There is order in heaven.

There is authority in heaven.

And at the center of everything stands the throne of God.

Psalm 103:19
“The LORD has established His throne in heaven, And His kingdom rules over all.”

Notice the word:

ALL.

Not some things.

Not merely religious things.

Not merely the Church.

His kingdom rules over all.

2. The Throne Was Already Set

John says:

“…a throne set in heaven…”

He does not say someone was preparing the throne.

He does not say angels were constructing the throne.

The throne was already there.

Before Revelation’s seals are opened—

the throne is there.

Before the trumpets sound—

the throne is there.

Before the bowls are poured out—

the throne is there.

Before Babylon falls—

the throne is there.

Before Christ returns in glory—

the throne is there.

This is crucial to understanding Revelation.

The judgments of Revelation do not occur because God has lost control.

They occur precisely because God is exercising His sovereign authority.

Revelation is not ultimately the story of Satan’s power.

It is the revelation of God’s sovereignty and Jesus Christ’s victory.

3. Earthly Thrones Rise and Fall

Where is Pharaoh’s throne today?

Where is Nebuchadnezzar’s throne?

Where is Caesar’s throne?

Where are the kings and empires that once terrified the world?

They disappeared.

Babylon rose and fell.

Medo-Persia rose and fell.

Greece rose and fell.

Rome rose and fell.

Human governments come and go.

Presidents come and go.

Kings come and go.

Generations come and go.

But Daniel declared:

Daniel 2:21
“And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings…”

Behind the movement of human history stands the sovereign God.

4. Satan Has Never Sat on God’s Throne

Never give the devil more authority than Scripture gives him.

Satan is powerful, but he is not Almighty.

Satan operates, but he does not reign over God.

Satan deceives, but he does not possess divine sovereignty.

Satan attacks God’s people, but he cannot overthrow God’s throne.

There has never been a morning when God awakened to discover Satan had taken control.

There has never been an emergency meeting in heaven.

There has never been panic around God’s throne.

Why?

Because:

Psalm 115:3
“But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.”

The devil is not God’s equal.

God alone is Almighty.

Closing

When your life feels unstable—

remember the throne.

When nations tremble—

remember the throne.

When darkness increases—

remember the throne.

When you cannot understand what God is doing—

remember the throne.

The throne is still SET IN HEAVEN.

“Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
