PART II — THE LAMB SACRIFICED

“Behold! The Lamb of God Who Takes Away the Sin of the World!”

John 1:29

The Lamb was provided.

But a sacrificial lamb had to die.

The mission of Jesus Christ was always moving toward Calvary.

Jesus did not accidentally end up on the cross.

The cross was not a tragic interruption of God’s plan.

The cross was central to God’s redemptive purpose.

1. THE LAMB WAS WITHOUT BLEMISH

The Passover lamb had to meet a specific requirement.

Exodus 12:5

“Your lamb shall be without blemish…”

Why?

Because it pointed toward Christ.

First Peter 1:18–19 says that we were redeemed:

“…with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”

Jesus Christ was sinless.

He never lied.

He never lusted.

He never hated sinfully.

He never deceived.

He never rebelled against His Father.

He never committed one sin.

Hebrews 4:15 says He was:

“…tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

Why is that important?

Because a sinful Savior could not save sinners.

The sacrifice had to be spotless.

And Jesus Christ was the spotless Lamb.

2. THE LAMB TOOK OUR PLACE

Isaiah 53:5 declares:

“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities…”

Notice the words:

Our transgressions.

Our iniquities.

Christ was not dying for His sins.

He had none.

He was dying for ours.

Second Corinthians 5:21 says:

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

This is substitution.

The innocent for the guilty.

The righteous for the unrighteous.

The sinless for the sinful.

The judgment that should have fallen upon us fell upon Christ.

The Lamb stood in our place.

3. LOOK AT THE CROSS AND SEE THE COST OF SIN

We sometimes treat sin lightly.

But look at Calvary.

See the nails.

See the crown of thorns.

See the suffering.

Hear Christ cry:

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

And understand:

Sin is not small.

The cross reveals both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God’s love.

Romans 5:8 says:

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

God did not wait for us to become righteous.

Christ died for us while we were sinners.

4. THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB CLEANSES

Revelation 1:5 speaks of Jesus Christ:

“To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood.”

There are stains that water cannot wash.

There are stains soap cannot remove.

There are stains money cannot erase.

There are stains good deeds cannot cover.

They are the stains upon the conscience caused by sin.

But First John 1:7 declares:

“…the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

How much sin?

ALL SIN.

Past sin.

Hidden sin.

Shameful sin.

Repeated sin.

The sin that nobody knows.

The sin you wish you could erase from your memory.

There is power in the blood of Jesus Christ.

5. THE LAMB DID NOT REMAIN DEAD

The Gospel does not end at the tomb.

Jesus declared:

Revelation 1:18

“I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore.”

The Lamb was slain.

But the Lamb lives!

The grave could not hold Him.

Death could not defeat Him.

Satan could not conquer Him.

On the third day Jesus Christ rose victoriously from the dead.

Therefore our faith is not in a dead martyr.

Our faith is in the living Son of God.

CLOSING

At the cross we see the Lamb sacrificed.

But we must make this personal.

It was my sin He carried.

It was my guilt He bore.

It was my judgment He took.

It was my salvation He purchased.

Therefore I cannot boast.

I cannot stand before God and say:

“Look what I have done.”

I can only say:

“LOOK WHAT THE LAMB HAS DONE!”

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, we worship You as the spotless Lamb who bore our sins upon the cross. Thank You for Your precious blood. Thank You for taking the judgment we deserved. Keep the cross before us and never allow us to treat lightly the salvation You purchased at such tremendous cost. May our lives belong completely to You. Amen.

“Maranatha! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
