PART III — THE JOY SET BEFORE THE BELIEVER

Carry the Cross Today Because Glory Is Coming

Hebrews 12:2 tells us that Jesus:

“For the joy that was set before Him endured the cross.”

Then Jesus tells His followers:

Luke 9:23 — “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

Christ’s cross and our cross are not the same. Jesus carried the cross to pay for our sins. We carry our cross because we belong to Him. His sacrifice accomplished redemption once for all; our daily cross is the cross of discipleship, surrender, and obedience.

But just as Jesus looked beyond His suffering, believers must learn to look beyond theirs.

1. THERE IS SOMETHING BEYOND THE CROSS

Paul declares:

Romans 8:18 — “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Christianity does not promise a life without suffering. It promises that suffering will not have the final word.

There is glory beyond the suffering.

There is resurrection beyond death.

There is victory beyond the battle.

There is eternity beyond this temporary life.

So when your cross becomes heavy, do not look only at what you are carrying. Look at where you are going.

2. OUR GREATEST JOY IS CHRIST HIMSELF

Jesus said:

John 14:3 — “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

The greatest joy set before the believer is not merely escaping suffering.

It is not merely receiving heavenly rewards.

It is not merely walking streets of gold.

Our greatest joy is being forever with Jesus Christ.

Paul said:

Philippians 1:23 — “Having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.”

One day faith will become sight.

The Jesus whom we worship without seeing will stand before us.

The Christ whom we followed through suffering will receive us into His presence.

That is the joy set before us.

3. KEEP LOOKING TO JESUS

Hebrews 12:2 begins with these powerful words:

“Looking unto Jesus.”

When the cross becomes heavy—

Look unto Jesus.

When obedience becomes costly—

Look unto Jesus.

When the world rejects you—

Look unto Jesus.

When temptation becomes strong—

Look unto Jesus.

When you become weary—

Look unto Jesus.

Do not throw down your cross because the journey became difficult.

Jesus endured because He knew what was beyond Calvary.

And believer, there is something beyond your cross too.

2 Corinthians 4:17 — “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”

Conclusion

Church, we have a cross to carry today, but we also have a joy set before us tomorrow.

So deny yourself.

Take up your cross daily.

Follow Jesus.

Keep your eyes fixed upon Him.

And remember:

The cross is temporary.

The suffering is temporary.

The struggle is temporary.

But the joy of being with Christ is eternal.

Final Declaration

LOOK TO JESUS.

CARRY YOUR CROSS.

FOLLOW CHRIST.

ENDURE TO THE END.

There is joy set before us.

“Maranatha! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
