PART II — OVERCOMING LUST: WALK IN THE SPIRIT

Galatians 5:16

“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

In Part I, we learned that lust begins in the heart. Now the question is: How does a believer overcome it?

1. Flee from lust

Paul tells Timothy:

2 Timothy 2:22 — “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace…”

The Bible does not tell us to negotiate with temptation. It tells us to flee.

Joseph demonstrated this when Potiphar’s wife tempted him:

Genesis 39:12 — “But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.”

Sometimes victory means walking away, closing the browser, putting down the phone, or removing ourselves from a tempting situation.

Do not remain where God has told you to flee.

2. Make no provision for the flesh

Romans 13:14 — “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”

If we know something repeatedly leads us into temptation, we should remove the opportunity.

We cannot continually feed the flesh and expect it to become weaker.

What you feed grows.
What you starve becomes weaker.

3. Walk in the Spirit

The greatest weapon against lust is not merely human willpower.

Galatians 5:16 — “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

Instead of only concentrating on not lusting, concentrate on following Christ.

Fill your mind with Scripture. Pray. Worship. Pursue righteousness. Keep your thoughts centered upon things that honor God.

The Holy Spirit produces something the flesh does not want:

Galatians 5:22–23 — “…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…gentleness, self-control.”

Lust says, “Satisfy yourself.”
The Spirit produces self-control.

4. When you fall, repent and return

1 John 1:9 — “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Failure should not cause a believer to run away from God. Confess the sin, repent, receive God’s forgiveness, and continue pursuing holiness.

Conclusion

The answer to lust is not simply learning to say NO to the flesh.

It is learning to say YES to Christ.

Luke 9:23 — “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

Flee from lust.
Make no provision for the flesh.
Walk in the Spirit.
Keep your eyes upon Christ.

Lust says, “Please yourself.”

Jesus says, “Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me.”

Purity is not merely the absence of lust; it is a heart surrendered to Jesus Christ.

“Maranatha! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
