PART II — THE TRUMPET OF GOD: RESURRECTION, RAPTURE, AND HOPE

1 Thessalonians 4:17

“Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”

The trumpet begins a sequence of extraordinary events.

1. Resurrection

First:

“The dead in Christ will rise first.”

Those who died believing in Christ have not been forgotten. Their bodies will be raised.

2. Transformation

Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 15:52–53:

“The dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”

The believer’s mortal condition will give way to immortality.

Corruption gives way to incorruption.

Mortality gives way to immortality.

3. The Catching Away

Then comes the event described in 1 Thessalonians 4:17:

“We… shall be caught up together with them.”

The Greek word translated “caught up” is harpazō, carrying the idea of being seized or taken suddenly.

This is the passage from which Christian teaching concerning the rapture of the Church is primarily derived.

The destination is clear:

“To meet the Lord in the air.”

The greatest promise of the rapture is not merely escaping something on earth.

It is meeting Someone in the air—Jesus Christ.

4. The Trumpet of God and Revelation’s Trumpets

An important distinction should be made, especially when considering a pre-tribulation interpretation.

The trumpet in 1 Thessalonians 4 should not automatically be identified with the seventh trumpet judgment in Revelation.

In the pre-tribulation understanding:

1 Thessalonians 4 — the trumpet accompanies the gathering of God’s people.

Revelation 8–11 — the trumpets announce judgments upon the world.

The contexts and purposes are different.

One is associated with resurrection and gathering.

The others are associated with tribulation judgments.

5. The Trumpet Is a Sound of Hope

Paul did not write 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 primarily to frighten Christians. He wrote it to comfort them.

That is why he concludes:

1 Thessalonians 4:18 — “Therefore comfort one another with these words.”

For the believer, the trumpet of God represents:

Resurrection.
Transformation.
Reunion.
Gathering.
Victory.
And everlasting fellowship with Christ.

When the trumpet of God sounds:

The dead in Christ will rise.
The living saints will be caught up.
The Church will meet Christ in the air.
And we shall always be with the Lord.

That is the glorious importance of the trumpet of God in 1 Thessalonians 4:16.

“Maranatha! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
