PART II — WHEN WILL THE ANTICHRIST APPEAR?

“The Man Who Will Be Revealed”

2 Thessalonians 2:3

“Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed…”

Notice Paul’s language:

“revealed.”

The Antichrist will eventually move from obscurity to open manifestation.

1. SCRIPTURE DOES NOT GIVE US HIS NAME OR A DATE

This needs to be stated clearly.

The Bible does not tell us the Antichrist’s personal name.

Therefore Christians should be cautious about declaring:

“This politician is definitely the Antichrist.”

“This president is the Antichrist.”

“This religious leader is the Antichrist.”

“This businessman is the Antichrist.”

Scripture gives characteristics by which the prophetic figure can be understood, but it does not authorize us to assign the title to contemporary individuals merely through speculation.

2. DANIEL’S SEVENTIETH WEEK IS CENTRAL TO THE PRE-TRIBULATION INTERPRETATION

Daniel 9:27 says:

“Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.”

Within dispensational pre-tribulation teaching, this “week” is understood as Daniel’s final seven-year period.

The ruler associated with this prophecy makes or confirms a covenant.

But halfway through the seven years, something dramatic happens.

The covenant is violated.

Sacrifice is stopped.

Abomination follows.

3. THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION

Jesus refers directly to Daniel:

“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place…” — Matthew 24:15

Paul gives another description:

“…he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” — 2 Thessalonians 2:4

Under a common futurist interpretation, this becomes the decisive unveiling of the Antichrist’s true character.

The peacemaker becomes persecutor.

The diplomat becomes dictator.

The ruler becomes blasphemer.

The man who offered solutions demands worship.

4. WHERE DOES THE RAPTURE FIT?

This is where interpretations among Christians differ.

In pre-tribulation theology, 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 is understood to teach that Christ catches away His Church before the seven-year Tribulation.

Paul also writes concerning the restraining of the “lawless one”:

“And now you know what is restraining…” — 2 Thessalonians 2:6

And:

“He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.” — 2 Thessalonians 2:7

Pre-tribulation interpretation describes the Restrainer in connection with the Holy Spirit’s restraining ministry through the Church. Other Christians interpret this passage differently.

So we should distinguish what the text explicitly says from how a particular prophetic system arranges the events.

But one fact is unmistakable:

“And then the lawless one will be revealed…” — 2 Thessalonians 2:8

There is coming a moment when the mask comes off.

APPLICATION

Our calling is not to spend our lives trying to calculate the identity of the Antichrist.

Our calling is to remain ready for Christ.

The question is not merely:

“When will the Antichrist appear?”

The greater question is:

“Am I ready to meet Jesus Christ?”

“Maranatha! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
