Most churches aren’t preaching about hell. But loving people means telling them the truth.
The Bible does not speak about hell to satisfy our curiosity.
It speaks about hell to awaken us to the seriousness of sin, the holiness of God, the certainty of judgment, and the greatness of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Hell tells us that sin is serious.
The cross tells us that God’s love is great.
And the empty tomb tells us that Jesus Christ has conquered death!
PART I — HELL IS REAL
“DO NOT FEAR THOSE WHO KILL THE BODY”
— Matthew 10:28
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Brothers and Sisters,
There are subjects people enjoy hearing about.
We love hearing about heaven.
We love hearing about blessing.
We love hearing about grace.
We love hearing about God’s promises.
But there is another subject in Scripture that cannot be ignored:
HELL.
Jesus did not avoid this subject.
And if Jesus considered it important enough to warn people about it, the Christian must consider it important enough to teach about it.
1. JESUS WARNED ABOUT HELL
Matthew 5:29 says:
“…it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.”
Jesus is showing us something important:
Sin must never be treated casually.
The world may redefine sin.
Culture may normalize sin.
People may celebrate what God condemns.
But changing our opinion about sin does not change God’s holiness.
Isaiah 6:3 declares:
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”
God is holy.
Therefore sin cannot simply be ignored.
2. PHYSICAL DEATH IS NOT THE END
Hebrews 9:27 says:
“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
Notice the order:
Death — then judgment.
The grave does not eliminate accountability before God.
Jesus said:
John 5:28–29
“…all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth…”
There will be resurrection.
There will be judgment.
There will be eternity.
Therefore the greatest question is not:
“When will I die?”
The greater question is:
“Where do I stand before God?”
3. SIN HAS CONSEQUENCES
Romans 6:23 declares:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Notice two realities:
Wages — death.
Gift — eternal life.
Sin pays wages.
But God offers a gift.
And that gift is found in:
JESUS CHRIST.
CLOSING
Hell should cause us to examine our lives.
But it should also cause us to look toward Christ.
Because the God who warns humanity about judgment is also the God who provided salvation.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…”
The warning is real.
But so is the invitation.
HELL IS REAL.
JUDGMENT IS REAL.
But praise God—
SALVATION IS ALSO REAL!
“Maranatha! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
