PART III — WHAT JESUS TAUGHT ABOUT HELL
“FEAR HIM WHO IS ABLE TO DESTROY BOTH SOUL AND BODY IN HELL”
Matthew 10:28
Some people imagine that hell is primarily an Old Testament concept.
But some of Scripture’s strongest warnings about judgment came from:
JESUS CHRIST.
The same Jesus who welcomed children—
warned about hell.
The same Jesus who healed the sick—
warned about judgment.
The same Jesus who forgave sinners—
called people to repentance.
Why?
Because love warns when danger is real.
1. JESUS SPOKE ABOUT GEHENNA
Mark 9:43 speaks about:
“…hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched.”
The Greek term used is Gehenna.
Jesus used it as an image of divine judgment.
His message was unmistakable:
Do not play with sin.
2. JESUS SPOKE ABOUT OUTER DARKNESS
Matthew 8:12 says:
“…cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Think about the contrast.
God is light.
Jesus said:
John 8:12
“I am the light of the world.”
But judgment is pictured as:
OUTER DARKNESS.
Sin promises freedom but ultimately leads away from the One who is life and light.
3. JESUS SPOKE ABOUT SEPARATION
Matthew 25:41 says:
“Depart from Me…”
Perhaps those are among the most frightening words imaginable.
Hell is not frightening merely because of fire.
The deepest tragedy is being under God’s judgment rather than enjoying fellowship with Him.
Human beings were created for God.
But sin separates humanity from God.
Isaiah 59:2 says:
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God…”
4. JESUS SPOKE ABOUT EVERLASTING PUNISHMENT
Matthew 25:46 says:
“And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Jesus places two destinies before us:
Everlasting punishment.
Eternal life.
This is why the Gospel cannot be treated casually.
Eternity is at stake.
CLOSING
Jesus warned about hell because Jesus came to save.
Luke 19:10
“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
The One who warned about judgment is also the One who stretched His hands upon the cross.
The warning came from the lips of Jesus.
The rescue came through the blood of Jesus.
“Maranatha! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
