PART II — THROUGH HIM AND FOR HIM

Jesus Christ, the Creator of All Things

    John 1:1–3; Colossians 1:16

    Genesis tells us:

    “In the beginning God created…”

John takes us deeper into this mystery.

    John 1:1–3
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him…”

The “Word” in John 1 is Jesus Christ, as John 1:14 makes clear:

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”

Therefore, Jesus did not begin in Bethlehem.

Bethlehem was His entrance into human history in the flesh.

But the Son existed before Bethlehem.

    JESUS CHRIST IS ETERNAL.

    1. JESUS WAS THERE IN THE BEGINNING

    John deliberately echoes Genesis:

    Genesis:

    “In the beginning God…”

    John:

“In the beginning was the Word…”

John is showing us something magnificent.

The One who walked beside the Sea of Galilee was present at creation.

The One who opened blind eyes was there when light was created.

The One who calmed the storm was there when the oceans were formed.

The One who multiplied bread is the One through whom the world itself was made.

This is why Jesus Christ cannot be reduced merely to a teacher, prophet, or religious leader.

    John says:

    “The Word was God.”

    2. EVERYTHING WAS CREATED THROUGH CHRIST

    Paul declares:

    Colossians 1:16
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible…”

    Notice the language:

    ALL THINGS.

    Visible things.

    Invisible things.

    Earthly things.

    Heavenly things.

    Material things.

    Spiritual beings.

Nothing in creation stands outside the creative authority of Christ.

And then Paul makes an even more powerful declaration:

“All things were created through Him and for Him.”

Do not miss those last two words:

    FOR HIM.

Creation does not ultimately exist for us.

    It exists for Christ.

    History is moving toward Christ.

    The universe belongs to Christ.

    The Church belongs to Christ.

And our lives belong to Christ.

    3. THE CREATOR ENTERED HIS OWN CREATION

Here is one of the greatest wonders of the Gospel.

    The Creator became flesh.

    John 1:14
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”

    Think about this.

The One who made the stars became a baby.

The One who created trees would one day be crucified upon wood.

The One who created human hands allowed human hands to nail Him to the cross.

The One who gives humanity breath cried from the cross:

    “It is finished!”

The Creator entered His creation to redeem fallen creatures.

    What humility!

    What mercy!

    What love!

    4. THE CREATOR BECAME OUR SAVIOR

Our greatest problem is not that we do not understand the universe.

    Our greatest problem is sin.

    Sin separated humanity from God.

But the Creator did not abandon His creation.

    Jesus came.

    Jesus died.

    Jesus shed His blood.

    Jesus was buried.

    Jesus rose again.

The hands that formed humanity were stretched upon the cross for humanity.

This is why our salvation is found in Christ.

    The Creator became the Redeemer.

    5. IF CHRIST CREATED YOU, LIVE FOR CHRIST

Colossians does not merely say everything was created through Him.

    It says everything was created:

    “FOR HIM.”

    Therefore ask yourself:

Am I living for the One who created me?

What good is it to acknowledge Jesus as Creator while refusing Him as Lord?

What good is it to say, “Jesus made me,” while living as though my life belongs entirely to me?

    Paul writes:

    2 Corinthians 5:15
“He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.”

Christianity is not merely adding Jesus to your life.

Christianity is surrendering your life to Jesus.

    Closing

Jesus Christ is not merely part of creation.

    HE IS THE CREATOR.

    He is before all things.

    He made all things.

    He sustains all things.

All things were created through Him.

And all things were created for Him.

    Therefore let the Church declare:

    JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!

    Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!
