PART I – “Engraved on the Hands of God”
God Never Forgets His People
Introduction
One of the deepest fears of every human heart is the fear of being forgotten.
Children fear being abandoned by their parents.
The elderly fear being forgotten by their families.
Employees fear being overlooked.
Christians sometimes wonder if God has forgotten them because their prayers seem unanswered.
This was exactly how the people of Israel felt.
Isaiah records their cry:
“But Zion said, ‘The LORD has forsaken me, And my Lord has forgotten me.’” (Isaiah 49:14)
God immediately answers that accusation with one of the most tender promises in Scripture.
“Can a woman forget her nursing child… Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.” (Isaiah 49:15–16)
This is not merely poetry. It is God’s covenant declaration that His people are never out of His sight.
I. God’s Love Is Greater Than Human Love
God compares His love with the strongest earthly affection—a mother’s love for her nursing child.
Although most mothers would never forget their babies, God acknowledges that human love can fail because humans are imperfect.
But then He says,
“Yet I will not forget you.”
Human promises fail.
God’s promises never fail.
Supporting Scriptures
- Deuteronomy 31:6 – “He will never leave you nor forsake you.”
- Psalm 27:10 – “When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the LORD will take care of me.”
- Hebrews 13:5 – “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
God remembers every prayer.
Every burden.
Every tear.
Every struggle.
Nothing escapes His attention.
II. Engraved—Not Written
The Hebrew word translated “inscribed” means to engrave permanently.
Unlike writing with ink…
Unlike chalk…
Unlike pencil…
Engraving cannot simply be erased.
This shows the permanence of God’s covenant.
Many people tattoo names on their bodies.
Years later they regret those tattoos.
Some remove them.
Some cover them.
God never removes His people.
His engraving is eternal.
III. Why God’s Hands?
Notice God does not say,
“I engraved you upon My heart.”
He says,
“Upon My hands.”
Hands represent:
- God’s power
- God’s work
- God’s protection
- God’s provision
- God’s activity
Everything God does is done with His people continually before Him.
His hands sustain creation.
His hands protect His children.
His hands provide daily bread.
His hands uphold the universe.
Those same hands hold His redeemed people securely.
IV. When We Feel Forgotten
There are seasons when God seems silent.
Israel experienced exile.
Joseph spent years in prison.
David hid in caves.
Job sat in ashes.
Even Jesus cried,
“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Silence never means abandonment.
God often works behind the scenes before revealing His purposes.
Faith trusts God’s promises more than present circumstances.
Practical Application
Ask yourself:
- Do I believe God’s Word more than my emotions?
- Am I allowing circumstances to define God’s love?
- Do I rest in His promises even when I cannot see His plan?
God’s remembrance is based on His faithfulness—not on our feelings.
Conclusion
Perhaps today you feel forgotten.
Your prayers seem unanswered.
Your burdens seem overwhelming.
Your future seems uncertain.
But God’s answer remains unchanged:
“See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.”
You are never forgotten.
You are never abandoned.
You are always before Him.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding us that Your love never fails and Your memory never fades. When we feel overlooked, abandoned, or discouraged, help us to rest in Your promise that You have engraved us upon the palms of Your hands. Strengthen our faith to trust You even when we cannot understand Your timing. May we live with confidence that we are loved, remembered, and securely held by You.
