When Life Has No Form

Before the Light Came

Introduction

The book of Genesis is the book of beginnings. The word Genesis literally means origin or beginning. Before God created mountains, oceans, animals, and mankind, He first gives us a picture of the earth in its original condition.

Genesis 1:2 describes the earth as:

• Without form
• Void (empty)
• Covered in darkness

This is more than a description of the early earth. It is also a spiritual picture of every human life apart from God.

Before Christ entered our lives, we too were spiritually without form, empty, and living in darkness.

Paul writes,

“Having no hope and without God in the world.” (Ephesians 2:12)

That is humanity’s condition without Christ.

I. Without Form

The Hebrew expression conveys the idea of desolation, confusion, and barrenness.

A life without God may appear successful outwardly, but inwardly it lacks eternal purpose.

People often pursue:

• Wealth
• Fame
• Pleasure
• Success
• Relationships

Yet after obtaining these things, many still ask,

“Is this all there is?”

Why?

Because only the Creator can reveal the purpose of His creation.

A watch cannot explain itself.

A painting cannot explain itself.

Only the One who made us can explain why we exist.

II. Empty

Genesis says the earth was void.

There are millions today who seem full outwardly but remain empty inwardly.

Many try to fill this emptiness with:

• Entertainment
• Careers
• Possessions
• Achievements
• Temporary pleasures

But the human heart was designed for fellowship with God.

As Augustine famously observed,

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

Only Christ satisfies the deepest longing of the soul.

III. Covered by Darkness

Darkness represents:

• Sin
• Ignorance
• Separation from God
• Spiritual blindness

Before salvation, Scripture says we walked according to the course of this world (Ephesians 2:2).

Without Christ, we cannot truly understand our identity or eternal destiny.

The greatest tragedy is not physical blindness but spiritual blindness.

Application

Think about your life before Christ.

Where were you headed?

What was controlling your decisions?

How did God rescue you?

Every testimony magnifies God’s grace.

Conclusion

The wonderful truth is that Genesis 1 does not end in darkness.

God was about to begin His transforming work.

Likewise, your life did not remain empty forever.

The Holy Spirit came.

God had not abandoned the earth, and He has not abandoned you.
